Two on a Tower (ENGLISH EDITION)

In the quiet landscapes of Victorian Dorset, Lady Constantine finds herself trapped in an unhappy marriage, longing for a life beyond the confines of duty and convention. Her world changes when she meets Swithin St. Cleeve, a young and ambitious astronomer whose fascination with the stars mirrors her own yearning for something beyond the ordinary. Despite their differences in age and social standing, an unexpected love begins to take shape between them.

As their relationship deepens, Lady Constantine and Swithin are forced to confront the boundaries imposed by Victorian society. Their romance defies expectations of class, marriage, age, and propriety, while Swithin’s pursuit of the heavens offers a striking contrast to the earthly complications of their love. Above them stretches the infinite universe; around them, a society determined to keep them apart.

With its blend of forbidden romance, social criticism, and astronomical wonder, Two on a Tower is one of Thomas Hardy’s most unconventional novels. Tender yet provocative, it places the fragile desires of two human beings against the immense scale of the cosmos, asking how much freedom love can claim in a world governed by convention, circumstance, and fate.
